Hull’s Healthy Schools celebrate with Minister
The Rt. Hon Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Health and MP for Hull, joined the CEO and Head of Children’s Services at Hull City Council for a special Healthy Schools celebration on Friday 19th October, where 35 Hull schools were officially awarded their ‘Healthy School’ status.
As one of the cities worst affected by flooding in the UK with nearly 90% of schools damaged by flooding, the celebration highlighted the hard work and incredible resilience of 35 schools, Pupil Referral Units and their communities in Hull who have achieved their status ‘against all the odds’.
As well as the 35 schools who were presented with their awards, a further 39 schools are currently working towards their Healthy School status. Many school communities in the area are now using the Programme’s criteria as a means to positively move forwards and effectively address the emotional health and wellbeing of many of Hull’s children and young people whose homes and communities have been affected.
In addition, 3 teachers and 8 school nurses received the DCSF’s PSHE Certificate for consistently demonstrating good teaching and support to pupils in Personal, Social and Health Education. Three schools were also highlighted for successfully taking part in a national pilot for the School Toilets Award.
Alison Cockerill, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator for Hull, says; “Our Healthy Schools celebration is an opportunity to celebrate all the hard work that schools have done to promote the health and well-being of pupils, staff and their wider school community, and we were delighted that the Rt. Hon Alan Johnson, MP was able to join us to share in the successes of our schools.”
As part of the celebration, pupils from the schools created and presented a multi-textured mosaic celebrating aspects of health which they felt were important to them. Pupils also demonstrated Activate (an exercise programme used in many Hull schools), and DVD’s made by young people celebrating clean toilets in schools were also shown.
